America’s Early First Ladies

Beautiful and wealthy, young Julia Gardiner was known as the “Rose of Long Island.” She became President John Tyler’s second wife, making the widower the first U.S. President to wed while in office. President Tyler had children with his first wife Letitia who were older than his new bride. The Tyler’s secret engagement, their thirty year age difference, and their lavish style of entertaining made them the subject of endless public fascination.
